How Long Does Cert 3 Early Childhood Education Take?

Last updated:

How long does Cert 3 early childhood take? There is no single national answer, because the qualification does not set a nominal duration and each training provider publishes its own. This guide sets out what the National Training Register says, lists the durations that the training providers in our table publish, and explains the questions to ask so that you can plan your time. The figures come from the training providers’ public pages, checked on 1 November 2026, and they can change.

How long does Cert 3 early childhood take?

The durations that training providers publish for the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care range from 6 to 9 months at one training provider to 18 months at another. Others sit between those figures, and one gives separate full-time and part-time durations in weeks. The differences reflect how each training provider designs and delivers the course. They are not a measure of quality, so use them to plan your time rather than to rank the courses.

What the training package says

The National Training Register page for CHC30125 does not list a nominal duration, so we do not state one for the qualification. What the register does state is the structure of the course. It has 17 units, made up of 15 core units and 2 elective units, and it requires a minimum of 160 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia.

Published durations by training provider

The list below copies the wording that each training provider uses on its course page.

  • Kirana Colleges: 12 months, with the ability to complete sooner.
  • NCVE: up to 12 months. NCVE describes the course as online and self-paced.
  • ITAC: many mature-aged students complete from 6 months, although completion time varies.
  • ACTAC: self-paced, 12 months.
  • ACCSC: self-paced, 12 months.
  • Monarch Institute: a course duration of 18 months.
  • The Performance College: 6 to 9 months.
  • CQUniversity: a 50-week period full-time and an 84-week period part-time.
  • AIPC: full-time study takes 12 months over 17 units.

Each of these is the training provider’s own statement about its own course. You can compare the other details of the same training providers in our full comparison.

Can you finish Cert 3 early childhood in 6 months?

Two training providers in our table publish a figure that starts at 6 months. ITAC states that many mature-aged students complete from 6 months, and it adds that completion time varies. The Performance College publishes a duration of 6 to 9 months. Neither statement is a promise that you will finish in that time, and the pages we read do not describe a fast track.

If speed matters to you, ask each training provider how long recent learners have taken, what a typical weekly commitment looks like, and whether the work placement is included in the time quoted.

How to read the published wording

The wording differs between training providers, and the differences matter. “Up to 12 months”, used by NCVE, sets a ceiling. “From 6 months”, used by ITAC, sets a starting point and says that completion time varies. “12 months, with the ability to complete sooner”, used by Kirana Colleges, gives a standard length and allows for a quicker finish. “Self-paced, 12 months”, used by ACTAC and ACCSC, ties the figure to a self-paced course. A range such as 6 to 9 months, used by The Performance College, shows both ends.

CQUniversity and AIPC state their figures in terms of study load, full-time or part-time, and CQUniversity states them in weeks. We have not converted weeks into months, because the conversion would be our own estimate and not the training provider’s statement. If you want a figure in a different unit, ask the training provider to confirm it.

What affects how long the course takes

The pages we read point to several factors:

  • Study load. CQUniversity publishes different durations for full-time and part-time study. AIPC states that full-time study takes 12 months.
  • Pace. Several training providers describe self-paced delivery, where the timeline depends partly on how much time you give the course each week.
  • Placement. The qualification requires 160 hours of work in a regulated service, and some training providers help to arrange it while others expect you to find your own. Our work placement guide explains the difference. The time it takes to confirm a placement may affect your timeline, so ask about it.
  • Start dates. Some training providers allow you to start at any time, while others run set intakes, as the next section explains.
  • Other requirements. The register states that you must complete the National Child Safety Training before you start any placement hours, and first aid is a core unit.

Start dates

NCVE states that you can start at any time and that there are no intake dates. ITAC states that you can start at any time. Monarch Institute states that you can start immediately or whenever you are ready. CQUniversity lists online intakes on set dates, from October 2026 through to December 2027. For the other training providers in our table, the course pages we read do not state start dates.

If you need to begin by a particular date, ask the training provider to confirm the next available start in writing.

Questions to ask about duration

  1. How long does the course take for someone with my study time each week?
  2. Is the published duration the time to finish the units only, or does it include the work placement?
  3. How is progress paced, and is there a maximum time I can take?
  4. When is the next start date?
  5. What are the costs if I need more time? Our cost guide explains what a published fee can leave out.
